Olivier Zahm with Hedy

olivier-zahm-capitalThe third issue of morena was shot by Olivier Zahm, Editor in Chief and Publisher of Purple Fashion Magazine. His philosophy relating to erotism, nudity and sex through photography is full of performatic facts that are purely developed in these shootings, in his words “I understood that morena was about the celebration of one girl, the celebration of her sensuality, her energy. It’s the first time that a magazine allows me to deepen the contact with a model and to shoot more than once. It’s the kind of things they only do in Japan. I have no assistant, there’s no hair and makeup, so somehow, something more intimate, more personal is bound to happen. Even one assistant changes the spirit of the shoot.”

Haydée Touitou — How does Olivier work – and what does it mean to work with Olivier.

Olivier Zahm — I rarely start a shoot with other pictures in mind, with visual references. I don’t things this way. I don’t really follow ideas, or mood boards… I never show another picture to the person I’m going to shoot saying I want them to pose a certain way or do certain things… It can be useful of course but I don’t do it. I like it when the inspiration comes from the person. Of course, I try to push in a certain sexual direction sometimes but only from what the person has given me first. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t really prepare anything. It all comes the relationship, my personal state of mind at that moment, the other person’s state of mind, what do we want to do on that particular day, what goes on through our minds… Photography is like an escape without any rules. You just have to manage good lighting; good settings on the camera, and not forgetting the memory card in your camera. Sometimes I forgot –hahaha. And some cameras don’t tell you if there’s no card!

Hedy — He’s different in a way that everything is mostly unplanned. He doesn’t tell you what to do. He just kind of wants you to be how you are so he can capture it. Sometimes, a lot of photographers tell you exactly what to do or they just have a specific thing they want. With Olivier, he has an idea on his mind, sort of general in terms of style, but he doesn’t have a specific idea of how this should look. So it’s actually interesting because you kind of have to trust him.
